EU launched a campaign to improve the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) at work.

The EU's Lighten the Load campaign is promoting an integrated approach to MSD prevention that pursues the retention, rehabilitation and return to work of those who suffer, or have suffered, MSDs.

MSDs are caused mainly by heavy physical work, frequent flexing and twisting, and tasks that subject the whole body to vibrations, with stress, cold and a fast pace of work as other aggravating factors.

The campaign's major event will be at European health and safety at work Week (22-26 October 2007), when a host of activities and events will be organised all over Europe.

There will also be Prizes for good practice in MSD prevention, which will be awarded at the campaign's closing ceremony in March 2008.

Second stage of consultation of the social partners on work-related musculoskeletal disorders

The objective of the consultation launched in March is to elicit the opinion of the European social partners, on the content of a possible Community initiative to protect workers from work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

On 9 November 2004, the Commission launched the first-stage of consultation of the social partners on work-related musculoskeletal disorders, which are currently covered by various Directives, each addressing a particular risk or a specific task as well as by the general provisions of the "framework" Directive 89/391/EEC of 12 June 1989.

A new legislative initiative would reduce the number of regulatory texts covering aspects of prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders by integrating the provisions of Directives 90/269/EEC and 90/270/EEC into a single new directive.
